A Beginner’s Journey into Midjourney: Navigating AI Art Creation

Hey there, creators! In this blog, I’m taking you through my first steps with Midjourney – an AI-based text-to-image creation tool. As I explore this new territory, I’m still getting to grips with the terminology and the layout, so join me as we learn together. This post serves as a basic guide to Midjourney, focusing on the sign-up process and getting acquainted with the Discord server.

Starting Your Midjourney Adventure

The Sign-Up Process

  1. Join the Beta: Your first step is to join the Midjourney beta. Click the ‘join the beta’ button and create your username (I chose ‘Creator Nerds’).
  2. Account Creation: Follow the usual steps – captcha verification, entering your birthday, and setting a password.
  3. Email Verification: After creating your account, you’ll receive a confirmation email. Verify it to continue.
  4. Discord Integration: Midjourney operates through Discord. Though downloading the Discord app offers better performance, you can also use the web app.

Navigating Discord

  • Understanding the Layout: Discord can be a bit overwhelming at first with its various options and features. You’ll see options to create servers, send direct messages, and more. Don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of it quickly.
  • Accessing Midjourney: Once you’re in Discord, find and click on the Midjourney server.

Using Midjourney

  1. Starting in Newbie Rooms: Select one of the newbie channels on the Midjourney Discord server to start.
  2. Observing and Learning: Spend time scrolling through the channel. You’ll see images others have created and the prompts they’ve used. This is a great way to understand how prompts translate into images.
  3. Creating Your First Image:
    • Type a backslash (/) in the message bar to bring up a list of commands.
    • Choose ‘Imagine’ – this is where you’ll input your creative prompt.
    • Your prompt can be detailed or simple, guiding the AI to create your desired image.
  4. Understanding Outputs: You’ll see four different images generated from your prompt. From here, you can upscale (U1-U4) or create variations (V1-V4) of these images.

Saving and Subscribing

  • Saving Images: Right-click (or tap on mobile) on an image to save it to your device.
  • Direct Messages: You can also have the Midjourney bot send you a direct message with your final results.
  • Subscription: Initially, you get 25 free uses. After that, you’ll need to subscribe to continue using Midjourney.

As a newbie myself, I’m just scratching the surface of what Midjourney can do. I’ll be exploring different prompts and techniques in future posts, so stay tuned for more insights and tips on this exciting AI art journey!
